Books given to students for achieving their vocabulary goals
DEAR program routine
1. Everyone must read - all students, teachers, teaching assistants, office staff, and administrators - with no exceptions. The emphasis is on reading for pleasure.
2. No interruptions - DEAR is an uninterrupted, silent, independent, and sustained reading activitywithout halt or hindrance. This means no questions, no comments, no taking, no telephone rings, no public-address system announcements, no coming and going, not even the teacher.
3. No reporting - DEAR is a free reading period where the accent is on reading enjoyment. When invited, students may choose to share what they have read, but they are never required to report on their readings.
The teacher may wish to encourage students to share their reading experiences in one or more of the following ways.
1. Keep a journal in response to their reading,
2. Share ideas about the books they are reading at a "peer conference,"
3. Advertise their favourite book and give a reading from the class "author's chair," or
keep a log of the books and number of pages they have read.

Celebrate birthdays with Book Club
Celebrate birthdays with Book Club
Throughout the school year, children in grades K-5 can celebrate their birthdays with the Birthday Book Club. The Birthday Book Club, co-sponsored by the Hudson Elementary School Libraries and Hudson PTO, is a fun way for parents and children to celebrate both birthdays and reading. As a participant, a child chooses a new book from his/her school library's Birthday Bookshelf, a bookplate with his/her name is placed on the inside cover, and he/she the first student to check out this new library book. During their library period, the child will also be presented with a certificate and a bookmark to keep as a remembrance of this celebration.
Through Oct. 31, any student whose birthday is between Aug. 1 and Oct. 31 is invited to enroll. Download an enrollment form from a school's page on www.HudsonPTO.org and return the completed form to a child's teacher with the $15 enrollment fee. Mark envelopes to the attention of the Birthday Book Club, and checks should be made payable to Hudson PTO.
