Librarians report to the school community (September 2012)

Hello,

Welcome to the Ermineskin Elementary School Library. During class visits to the library we read, 'Something Beautiful by Sharon Dennis Wyeth, Treaty days by Joan Pedersen, and poems written by Shel Silverstein.'

We celebrated 'Reading is an Essential Skill' day on September 21. Thank you for participating and for reading with your children.

Library's take-home program for Grade 5 and 6 students has started and if you would like your child to be enrolled in this program then please sign the permission slip and give it to the teacher.

We have started a simple learning to use the library lessons such as, 'How do I find the books in the library? Call numbers and Organization # 1'. Watch out for our October lesson, Trick OR Treat # 2 Boolean Operators. If you would like to receive library lessons by email then please come in the library and give us your email address.

Thank you for encouraging your children to take Accelerated Reading tests at home. Week 2: 485 books read; 758,968 words read.

Indigo Love of Reading Foundation has adopted our school. Please go to http://adoptaschool.indigo.ca/eng/schools/151 and adopt Ermineskin (it costs you nothing and Indigo will donate books for every adoption). Week 1 update: 68 adopters, 122 books given to our school.

Come and meet Xtine and Jesse at the Ermineskin Mall on Friday, September 28, 12-1 pm to celebrate Arts Day

Xtine and Jesse:

Xtine Cook lives in the house behind which Gloria Black Plume was murdered. For 11 years, she sought contact with Gloria's family and searched for an Aboriginal artist to create a memorial mural. This film is the result of that search.

Raised in Red Deer, Jesse Gouchey grew up drawing and sketching as a hobby while competing with his siblings for the best quality art. Leaning as much about fine art as he could at school, Jesse took to street art and graffiti to satisfy his need for colour and expression.

After working in and then leaving the oil patch to move to Calgary, Jesse began mixing traditional West Coast native styles with modern media and began selling canvasses. Curating, exhibiting and collaborating in many shows, he has shown in galleries around Central Alberta.

Jesse received animation training at Quickdraw Animation's Aboriginal Youth Animation Project and has completed two short animated films. Jesse is currently a junior artist on an Aboriginal graphic novel, and enjoys how his art has brought him closer to his Cree heritage.

Jesse will do a spray paint lecture-demo, along with the screening of Prairie Tales.
More information about the Prairie Tales program is available on the following page.

Indigo Adopt a School

It would be great if you and all the teachers in your school went online and
adopted Ermineskin at http://adoptaschool.indigo.ca/eng/schools/151 <http://adoptaschool.indigo.ca/eng/schools/151>

Students, parents and friends can do the same, and promoting the campaigbn on personal Facebook
and Twitter pages is also helpful. The text I used as my own status was "My
store is raising $12 000 for the Ermineskin Elementary School library.
Please go to http://adoptaschool.indigo.ca/eng/schools/151 and adopt
Ermineskin (it costs you nothing and Indigo will donate one book for every
fifty adoptions) or buy a $25 gift certificate (and Indigo will donate one
book for every e-card sold)."

There is also a contest that your school can enter at
http://adoptaschool.indigo.ca/eng/contest . Here you can tell the story of
your library and win up to $10 000 for the school.

It would be great if some of the kids could draw pictures or write letters
about books they want to read.

Thanks,

Indigo's Adopt a School

We're four days away from the official kick-off of Adopt-A-School, and our staff is really excited! We'll be doing our first bake sale on Saturday, and we'd be happy to have extra participants if anyone from your school wants to contribute (or purchase)!

This is my first big Love of Reading event, but my more senior colleagues have assured me that the key to a successful campaign is school involvement. Everyone should be able to go online and adopt your school at http://adoptaschool.indigo.ca/eng/schools/151 and for every fifty adoption Indigo will donate a book. There will shortly be a link to purchase online gift certificates as well, with a large part of the proceeds going to the adopted school.

In addition, we're running a gift basket draw and penny and bottle drives, as well as casual days and staff dressup days. Customers who contribute will be able to write their name on a card to acknowledge their generosity. It would be great if Ermineskin students could draw pictures or write letters telling us and our customers about their favourite books. I believe Jackie has already contacted you about photos and permission slips so we could post images of students on Facebook.

We're marshalling all our resources for this fundraiser, but I'd love to have your input if you have additional suggestions!

Hope the school year is going well so far,

Library Take-Home Program

September 2012

Dear Parent/Guardians:

Re: Library Take-Home Program

We wish to begin a program with our students allowing them to take home library books. In order to safeguard our book collection for the use of all students, only those students whose parents are willing to promote the care and prompt return of books will be permitted to take books out of the school.

Please find here below a permission slip, which must be signed and returned to the school before your child will be permitted to bring library books home.

If you do not wish to have your child participate in this program at this time that is fine. If you change your mind at a later date, just let your child's teacher know and we will send another permission slip home to be signed and returned.

Thank you,

Manisha Khetarpal
Librarian

Please sign the form below and return to the Ermineskin Elementary School

When I sign my name on this form I promise that my child will take good care of the materials he or she brings home from the Ermineskin Elementary Library. I promise to pay any fines justly charged to me. I understand that the cost of a lost book will be the replacement value.

Books are like kids....AWESOME!

This display was created by Mr. Hungle. He brought the students to the library. Then, asked our students to browse, pick and read their favourite book. Then we took pictures of the student with their books.  The pictures were printed and taped on the book and displayed in the display cases in the gathering area. Awesome, display title!

Watch the students getting ideas for reading. This is the best readers advisory service and peer to peer promotion of reading.
